Organizing Videos — Folders and Playlists

In our humble (expert) opinion, and according to (scientific) research, folders make your videos much easier to organize and share.

Whenever you upload a batch of videos we’ll ask you to add them to an existing folder or to create a new one. When you publish a new mix or upload a single video, you’ll also be prompted to add it to a folder.

If you don’t want to bother naming your folders, we’ll just apply default titles based on the date of upload.

Folders provide an easy way to organize and share the videos that you upload to Motionbox. Playlists are collections that can include other people’s videos as well as your own.

For example, you might upload a few videos of your Cousin Joe’s wedding to a folder called “Summer 2007,” but you can also share it as part of your Family Fun Playlist, and Cousin Jane can add it to her Joe’s Wedding Playlist.

The important thing to remember is that, while a video can live in just one folder, it may be added to many different Playlists.

Yes, Virginia. However, you can feel free to keep all your videos in one folder. You can even call this folder “All My Videos.” Pretty clever, huh?

You most certainly can! Just click on the “Share Now” button on the left side of the folder page.

Folders don’t have privacy settings, but if all of the videos in a folder are marked as private, the folder will not be visible to those who don’t have permission to view the videos.

At this time, a video can only be in one folder, but you may add a copy to as many Playlists as you like!

You can move videos from one folder to another at any time by clicking on the “move to folder” link on the play page or on the folder list page.

Yes, but first you have to find a new home for all of those videos. The easiest way to do this is to open up the folder, select all videos, and move them to another folder. The folder you want to delete will now be empty and can be trashed without losing any videos.

The Mobile Folder is the default upload location for videos you post to Motionbox from your mobile phone or by email. Learn more about mobile uploads. After you’ve sent a video to the mobile folder, you can move it to any other folder you like.

For the time being, this folder cannot be deleted, even if you don’t plan to post mobile videos to Motionbox.

There are two ways to rename a folder:

• From your list of folders, click on the “rename” link on the folder you wish to change.
• From inside the folder, click on “Folder Options” in the toolbar at the top of the page, and select “rename folder.”

You sure can. When you are inside a folder, click on the “Folder Options” button in the toolbar, and select “reorder videos” from the dropdown menu. Click and drag the video thumbnails to reorder them. You can reorder your videos at any time, but please be aware that there’s currently no way to automatically revert back to the original order.

You can add all or selected videos from any folder to your Mixer, so you can edit and combine them into a single video. Just open any folder, select the videos you want to mix using the checkbox next to each thumbnail, and click on the “Add to…” link in the toolbar at the top of the page. Select “mixer” from the dropdown menu, and you’re ready to create your mix!

Motionbox members have the right to enable or disable mixing permissions on their public videos. Before selecting someone else’s videos to add to your Mixer, check the permission setting. You can do this by rolling your mouse over the little privacy icon below the thumbnail.

Want to copy videos from a folder to a Playlist? Select the thumbnails and click on the “Add to…” link in the toolbar. Choose “Playlist(s)” from the dropdown menu and you’ll be ready to add your selected videos to existing or new Playlists!
